Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is one of my favorite games of all time, but revisiting a murder mystery game means you know all the answers, and there aren’t any surprises. Well, Spike Chunsoft has found a way to get around that with Danganronpa 2×2, an enhanced remake of the visual novel coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and both Switch consoles in 2026.
The game was announced during today’s Nintendo Direct, and is really two games in one, thus the title. On top of a completely revamped visual presentation for the original game, Danganronpa 2×2 also includes a new “what if” scenario that changes up the killers, victims, and storylines. The new story is being supervised and written by original creator Kazutaka Kodaka and other members of Too Kyo Games. So if you were worried that Spike Chunsoft was simply doing another cash grab without the original creators’ involvement like Danganronpa S, you can relax: that doesn’t seem to be the case this time.

I’m super precious about the original Danganronpa trilogy, and would have been pretty annoyed if Spike Chunsoft chose to continue that story and trample all over its conclusion. But a remixed story that is apparently just as long as the original game is a fun concept that can make it fresh without me getting too in my feelings about “canon.” I’m allowed! Danganronpa‘s original storyline is one of my favorites in games, and its conclusion in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School doesn’t need to be expanded upon. If Kodaka and his crew are working on this, it’s the best-case scenario in my opinion. Plus, being able to replay the original game with new visuals and presentation is an added bonus. I’m ready to head back to Jabberwock Island and subject myself to Monokuma’s killing game again.
