Silksong, As Told By Steam Reviews

After seven long years, Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally left the realm of games we’re always hoping to see at some event or showcase. Silkpost no more. We can all finally play Silksong–and for just 20 bucks at that!

With a few days of playtime under their belts, folks have flocked to the internet to opine, elating over finally getting to play such a long-awaited game, and despairing over a surprisingly steeper learning curve than some were expecting.

So let’s turn our attention to the Steam reviews section of Hollow Knight: Silksong to see how it’s faring with the chorus.

At the time of writing, Silksong is enjoying a “Very Positive” status for its English-language reviews. Fans have rushed in to share their enthusiasm for the long-awaited game. Those who aren’t as excited, as you might expect, are frustrated with not merely the difficulty, but how various challenges seem to feel like unfair “gotcha” moments. Many positive reviews, however, echo back that the game is much more manageable once you get deeper into the story and have amassed some more powerful skills.

So let’s jump into some standout reviews, both of the silly and (somewhat) useful kind.

A review reads: "Hollow Knight was hard, but I never really felt like it was "mean" per se.This game is extremely, unbelievably mean. I love it, but I found myself thinking at several points, "Man, there was no reason to do that to me. They just wanted people to suffer, didn't they?"

A review reads: " If I had a nickel for every time I had to slap a tiny bug for trying to get physical with me, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. "

A review reads: "A game about bugs, where your a bug that fights other bugs. The only thing that really bugs me is how long it took for this buggy little bug of a game to finally bug its way onto my screen.10/10 - No software bugs, just actual bugs. "

A review reads: "Team Cherry typed "Silksong" into the patch notes of reality and rage-quit the timeline. Since then: I've graduated college. Elon Musk renamed Twitter and then drove it into a ditch. The Queen died. COVID came and went like a Dark Souls boss fight nobody wanted. I changed GPUs three times. My nephew was born, learned to speak, and now mocks me daily. Skyrim was ported to a smart fridge. NASA found water on Mars. Reality finally patched. "

A review reads: "This is no game, but a work of art, for the masochist’s heart. Hunter’s March is but the training ground; Bilewater lies beyond — where the true weight is found. Three hundred and sixty-five steps you tread, no mercy of save-points lies ahead, then monsters descend, fight upon fight till the boss waiting at the end. When numbers fall short, they make its damage doubled; when mechanics are lacking, they make more enemies joined. Triumph brings no gold, death turns all to dust; each victory empty, each loss a bust. Even veterans grant it dread — they'd call it no fun; Butter-fingered players, better turn and run. "

A review reads: " this game is not designed for fun, enjoyment, happiness, or satisfaction. it was designed to make you suffer and wither your soul. every step of the way the devs are trying their hardest to make you not want to finish the game. only purchase if you are a mentally disturbed individual who might be into that sort of thing. A review reads: " its like hollow knight but more. the visuals are great, the music is great, hornet's movement is really fun and controls well, and when the combat finally clicks for you its fantastic. my only complaint is we can't pet the bell beast :( "

A review reads: "The skill floor in this game is a lot higher and honestly makes the game a lot less fun and less rewarding, you're worn down by the time you get past a boss. Will continue trying but every enemy has an attack that can do over 2 hearts of damage. You start with 5.I enjoyed getting my ass kicked by the Radiance and Nightmare King Grimm I simply don't feel the same about these bosses. "
